The Jacquard loom: how a 200-year-old punch-card machine still decides what's on the bolt
Damask, brocade, and tapestry-weave fabrics owe their intricate patterns to a control system invented in 1804 that also happens to sit at the root of computing.
When a fabric carries an intricate woven pattern rather than a printed one, the design is usually the work of a Jacquard mechanism, and the idea behind it is more than two centuries old. Joseph Marie Jacquard demonstrated his loom attachment in Lyon in 1804, and it solved a problem that had made figured cloth painfully slow to weave: how to control each warp thread individually, on every pass, without a person setting them by hand.
On a simple loom the warp threads are lifted in fixed groups, which limits you to stripes, checks, and small repeats. To weave a large, curving, non-repeating figure you need to raise any warp thread you like on any given pass. Jacquard's answer was a chain of stiff cards, each punched with holes. On each pass, the card presented to the head lets some hooks through the holes and blocks others, and that pattern of hooks decides exactly which warp threads rise. One card equals one row of the design; the whole chain is the whole pattern, and the loom can weave it faultlessly over and over.
That punched-card logic reached far beyond textiles. It directly influenced the design of early calculating and tabulating machines, and the notion of storing instructions as patterns of holes is one of the threads that runs into the history of computing. The loom that made damask also helped teach machines to follow a program.
For a fabric buyer the practical point is what the mechanism produces. Damask, brocade, and tapestry weaves are Jacquard fabrics, patterned in the weave itself, so the design is built from the interplay of warp and weft rather than sitting on the surface as print. That is why the pattern often reverses to a negative on the back, why it does not crack or wear off the way a print can, and why these cloths cost more: every one of those threads was placed by a machine executing a punched program written, in spirit, in 1804.
